Trump reiterates promise to pardon US Capitol attackers

Washington, Dec 9 (Prensa Latina) US President-elect Donald Trump reiterated his promise to pardon all those currently serving sentences for the attack on the federal Capitol on January 6, 2021.

He confirmed this in his first television interview since his electoral victory, where he reviewed a series of his campaign commitments, including those related to the immigration issue, health care and his plans for the Department of Justice.

In the interview, given to NBC News and aired the day before, the Republican said that on his first day in office he will pardon people incarcerated for their role in the riot more than three years ago.

“First day. Yes, I’m looking for these pardons,” Trump said on ‘Meet the Press’.

According to the Department of Justice (DOJ), more than 1,500 people have been arrested or charged in connection with the assault on Congress headquarters that January 6 and nearly 900 of them pleaded guilty.

On the issue of retribution, which was one of the centerpieces of his 2024 campaign, he indicated that he would not order his political rivals to be prosecuted, but those he chose -if confirmed- for key positions in the DOJ and FBI could do so if they wanted to.

In addition to attacking President Joe Biden and special prosecutor Jack Smith who brought his cases of mishandling classified documents and election interference, Trump also sharply criticized the House Select Committee that investigated the Capitol attack and even called for jailing its members.
