The rotating president of the bloc and Prime Minister of Grenada, Dickon Mitchell, said in a statement that the member states of the Community greatly value collaboration in both directions, highlighting the bilateral and regional assistance provided by Havana.
In this regard, he referred to the support in the training of well-qualified human resources the provision of health care, and critical inputs to improve the well-being of the Caribbean population.
“I am particularly proud that this friendship, solidarity, and cooperation has stood the test of time. Cuba has provided very important levels of assistance, despite the harmful effects of the economic, commercial, and financial blockade imposed by the United States against our sister country in the Caribbean,” he said.
He took advantage of the message to reiterate Caricom’s call to Washington to lift this “anachronistic embargo” once and for all and conveyed solidarity with Cuba in the face of the devastating impact of the recent hurricanes and earthquakes.
“On the commemoration of this important anniversary, on behalf of the Community, I express my best wishes to the Government and people of Cuba, and I look forward to greater friendship, cooperation, and solidarity that characterize our unique partnership,” Mitchell emphasized.
Caricom and Cuba on December 8 will celebrate 52 years of ties, established when Barbados, Guyana, Jamaica, and Trinidad and Tobago, on that date in 1972, took that step despite the prevailing global political tensions, thus marking an exemplary partnership.
