Cuba-CARICOM Day celebrated in Havana

Havana, Dec 6 (Prensa Latina) The president of the National People's Power Assembly of Cuba (Parliament), Esteban Lazo, headed the event to commemorate Cuba-CARICOM Day in Havana's Caribbean Heroes Park on Friday.

The event celebrated the 52nd anniversary of diplomatic relations between Cuba and the first four Caribbean countries (Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Guyana and Barbados).

The leader of the Cuban legislature laid a wreath at the monument in honor of personalities who symbolize the solidarity and courage of the Caribbean peoples in their struggles against colonialism and for independence.

Lazo noted that the ties between Cuba and the member States of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) have always been characterized by affection, admiration, mutual respect, brotherhood, solidarity and cooperation.

As an important milestone in these more than five decades of relations, he pointed out that Cuba has contributed to the professional training of more than 6,000 Caribbean students who are putting their knowledge and talent to work for the development of their respective nations.

Lazo thanked all Caribbean brothers for their support for the Cuban Resolution’s condemnation of the economic, commercial and financial blockade imposed by the Government of the United States.

The chargé d’affaires a.i. of Trinidad and Tobago in Cuba, Cindy Shivani Maharaj, stated that 52 years after the establishment of diplomatic relations between the first four Caribbean nations and Cuba, this fact continues to be the most precious legacy.

She expressed her solidarity with Cuba in the face of the damage caused by Hurricanes Oscar and Rafael, and by the earthquakes, and also wished Cuba success in its recovery.

The diplomat confirmed that, despite its own challenges, Cuba remains a pillar of strength and an inspiration, not only for the small countries of the Caribbean Community, but for the entire world.

Also present in the event were Deputy Foreign Minister Josefina Vidal, and the president of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP), Fernando González, among other officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and members of the diplomatic corps accredited in Cuba.
