Authored by Congresswoman Marina Helou, the bill prohibits the devices in all basic education, for all ages.
Cell phones may not be used while students are in school, including breaks between classes, recesses, and any extracurricular activities.
In the last few months, the consensus on the risks to the learning and development of children and young people caused by cell phones has gained strength in the country.
At the national level, a national bill was approved by the Education Commission, and in October it will be submitted to the Constitution and Justice and Citizenship Commission. After the Senate will proceed to its evaluation.
Several states have laws from 2007 or 2008 that talk about the prohibition of equipment in classrooms, but some became deadlocks because of the difficulty of implementation and lack of foundation.
Countries such as Finland, The Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, and the United States recently approved policies to ban or restrict the devices, also based on the new post-pandemic research on Covid-19.
