Cuban President assesses nationwide plan against social evils

Havana, Dec 5 (Prensa Latina) Cuban President, Miguel Diaz-Canel, has been closely assessing a nationwide campaign designed to deal and neutralize a number of social evils affecting normal life in Cuba, as part of an endeavor closing on December 7.

Officially defined as “National Exercise for the Prevention and Confrontation of Crime, Corruption, Illegalities and Social Misbehavior”, the government-sponsored plan was the focus at a meeting Wednesday, when first secretaries of the Communist Party (PCC) in each province briefed the president on relevant measures they started to implement on December 2.

Their respective initiatives extend from exerting control on retail prices and imposing fines on related offenders, to reviewing debt records and staging exemplary trials for drug offenses, Granma newspaper reported.

Also part of the agenda are a keeping a close watch on environments and individual whose attitude may lead to committing murder or robbery, as well as confiscating ill-gotten goods, which will be later sold to customers through different channels, and thoroughly revising contracts between state and non-state entities, among others.

The PCC meeting also reviewed the recovery process in the aftermath of two hurricanes and two earthquakes in the West and East of the country, respectively. Diaz-Canel , acknowledged the progress made, saying “we have worked seriously and have made a tremendous effort”.

In reference to the campaign to wipe off social evils, the Cuban President highlighted its potential public impact, because the population, he noted, is demanding that we maintain this level of confrontation against crime, corruption and illegalities.

Accordingly, he urged cadres to deliver a heavy blow to such evils as drugs, theft, slaughter of livestock and tax evasion.

The meeting also reviewed the reconnection of the National Electric Grid, after the total failure it suffered on Wednesday, followed by a gradual recovery ever since.
