Japan praises sake’s declaration as intangible cultural heritage

Tokyo, Dec 5 (Prensa Latina) Japan is celebrating on Thursday a decision by the United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to include Japan's knowledge and traditional techniques for the production of sake and other alcoholic beverages in the Intangible Cultural Heritage list.

These include “shochu” and “awamori,” but the most famous in the world is undoubtedly “sake,” the national drink made from fermented rice fermented.

NHK news channel reported that sake-making was established more than 500 years ago, and its process involves steaming rice, barley, or other ingredients, adding “koji” mold, and fermenting the liquid.

Such drinks are an inalienable part of Japanese culture and are commonly used in celebrations, traditional festivals, and even rituals.

Sake marks the 23rd Intangible World Heritage registration for Japan.
