NHK news channel reported that sake-making was established more than 500 years ago, and its process involves steaming rice, barley, or other ingredients, adding “koji” mold, and fermenting the liquid.
Such drinks are an inalienable part of Japanese culture and are commonly used in celebrations, traditional festivals, and even rituals.
Sake marks the 23rd Intangible World Heritage registration for Japan.
