Cuba focuses on basic services in aftermath of national power failure

Havana, Dec 4 (Prensa Latina) Cuba is currently giving priority to revive basic public services, following an unexpected and extensive shut down of its National Electric System (SEN) in the early morning hours of Wednesday, as one of its thermoelectric plants left the grid.

According to the Electric Union, repair works have already reenergized over 20 hospitals and 35 circuits in Havana alone.

These circuits are located in the municipalities of Guanabacoa, Boyeros, Habana del Este, Centro Habana, Cerro and Marianao.

According to the Ministry of Energy and Mines, islands of distributed generation are already operating throughout the country, and several generating units are ready to begin their start-up, while microsystems have been activated to guarantee pumping water and other basic services.

These power “micro-islands” currently generate 220 megawatts.

Likewise, in the city of Matanzas, power has been reinstated to the circuits comprising the Faustino Pérez Hospital, the communications repeater and the television antenna of La Cumbre, located on top of a hill, the highest point of the namesake neighborhood.

Central Villa Clara has built two circuits by concentrating a cluster of diesel engines from the industrial zone of the city of Santa Clara.

Cuba’s central region is fed by the Hanabanilla hydroelectric plant, which will be linked to the engines of the Cienfuegos refinery to reach Energás Varadero, which regulates frequencies.

After completing this process, power will be available for the start-up of the Antonio Guiteras Thermoelectric Power Plant (CTE) in Matanzas this evening, experts informed Cubadebate website.

In the eastern region, the engines in Moa region are being started to transmit power to Felton (Holguín) plant, and to Renté (Santiago de Cuba), while unit 5 of Nuevitas, Camagüey, should start soon delivering energy to the center.

Speaking on national TV, experts explained that SEN’s recovery is a gradual process, with the purpose of avoiding a new disconnection that would slow down its restoration.
