Africa will contribute varieties to Global Seed Vault

Oslo, Dec 3 (Prensa Latina) At a time when armed conflicts and climate are stoking food insecurity across Africa, several of its countries are voicing their will this week to contribute local varieties to the Svalbard Global Seed Vault.

Often called the “Doomsday Vault,” the genebank located deep in the Arctic safeguards the genetic diversity of the world’s food supply, the DowntoEarth website reported.

A case in point is Sudan, which despite the war ravaging it , has assembled and shipped samples of pearl millet and sorghum this month, said Lynda Mwakisha from Crop Trust, an international organization working to preserve crop diversity, as one way to protect global food and nutrition security.

Chad will be depositing 1,145 samples of sesame, rice, maize, and sorghum.

This contribution is particularly significant as these seed varieties are adapted to Chad’s harsh climate and are, therefore, crucial to developing crops that can withstand rising temperatures and erratic rainfall, Crop Trust stated, focused on agricultural biodiversity, conservation, food security, and germplasm banking.
