Honduras registers over 43 thousand people with HIV

Tegucigalpa, Dec 3 (Prensa Latina) Honduras registered more than 43,000 people with the Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) after the diagnosis of 875 new cases in the first nine months of 2024, local media reported.

According to the newspaper La Tribuna quoting the state National Human Rights Commissioner (Conadeh), in total there are 43,190 people diagnosed with HIV between 1985 and September 2024. The coordinator of the Conadeh HIV Ombudsman, Francia Maradiaga, urged to promote inclusion as an essential way to eradicate the disease, ensure sustainable development and human security.

“To continue to advance on the path of rights, concrete affirmative actions are required that drive the process and that at the end of the road we can all fully enjoy our fundamental rights, without distinction of any condition,” Maradiaga said.

The expert said that one of the commitments of Conadeh is to contribute to reducing the barriers that hinder the fulfillment of the rights of people living with HIV, the source said.

She added that, of the total cases diagnosed in this Central American nation, 16,547 are asymptomatic, while 26,643 correspond to advanced infection of the virus.
