Catherine Bradsa, second head of mission and Consul of the United Kingdom in Cuba, explained that on this occasion the event’s main venue will be El Mejunje Cultural Promotion Center, a LBGT-friendly space promoting inclusion, equality and diversity, which adheres to the values the cultural week advocates.
“The British Embassy aims to extend the scope of its activities to other provinces. So, when started searching for a venue a few months ago, all roads led us to El Mejunje, better known as the Cuban cultural oasis, which celebrated its 40th anniversary this year”, said the diplomat.
The event’s inauguration will witness the launch of “San Silverio del Mejunje”, a book paying homage to the place’s inceptor, Ramón Silverio, to be followed by gigs featuring the bands Keimzeity and Bluespirit, which previously performed at “Ciudad Metal Festival” (heavy rock), in the city of Santa Clara.
Silverio said during the culture week art pieces will be displayed, to recall artists who have left a mark in the history of this cultural center, which has advocated trova music, stage plays, rock, country music and drag catwalks.
The main events scheduled from November 29 and December 8, both in Santa Clara and Havana, will include a workshop on genre diversity in educational facilities, plays, musical shows and British humor, as well as the screening of cartoons from the European country.
Each edition of the British Culture Week in Cuba represents an opportunity for exchange among artists and organizations from both countries, thus contributing to bring the two countries closer together.
