Cuba participates in panel on 40th anniversary of ARCAL

Vienna, Nov 27 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Deputy Prime Minister Eduardo Martínez participated on Wednesday in the high-level panel of the Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Science, Technology and Applications and the Technical Cooperation Program of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).

Entitled ARCAL: 40 Years Transforming the Region with Nuclear Science and Technology, the meeting commemorated the 40th anniversary of the ARCAL Regional Agreement and its impact on the socioeconomic development of Latin America and the Caribbean.

It also celebrated its promotion of dialogue between authorities and experts on the challenges and opportunities of technical cooperation.

During the meeting, ministers and authorities from Brazil, Cuba, El Salvador, Honduras and Peru presented their experiences and success stories in the fields of human health, agriculture and food, environment, energy and radiation technologies.

According to the Cuban Foreign Ministry, in his speech, Martínez underscored priorities of the Cuba, a small island developing state, related to climate change and the marine environment and explained the ways in which ARCAL can support the country in this regard.

Martínez indicated that regional cooperation through ARCAL is essential to strengthen the role of Latin America and the Caribbean in global climate mitigation.

He added that sharing knowledge and capabilities on issues such as blue carbon will allow Cuba and the region to consolidate themselves as leaders in this area.

The Regional Cooperation Agreement for the Promotion of Nuclear Science and Technology in Latin America and the Caribbean (ARCAL) was created in 1984 to promote the use of nuclear technologies with peaceful and development ends.
