Cuba bets big on solar energy

Camagüey, Cuba, Nov 27 (Prensa Latina) With three new local photovoltaic plants in the making, Cuba’s central Camaguey province takes one more step towards further exploitation of renewable energy as an alternative for the island.

Seeking to apply the country’s policy of harnessing natural resources to improve the availability of electric power, this new program “will contribute 60 megawatts (MW) to the 12 MW already generated in Camaguey by this means, as an essential part of the development of renewable sources of energy in the country,” indicated the digital portal Cubadebate.

The first of the sites, boasting a 20-MW capacity and the largest in the province, will be located in the municipality of Vertientes, built over 32 hectares where different works ware being paved or erected, from roads and buildings to control booths and container yards, the artcle indicated.

Over a dozen brigades will assemble the infrastructure.

The Investment office of the Electric Power Company in Camaguey explained that the other parks will be installed in the municipalities of Sierra de Cubitas and in the provincial capital, Camagüey.

Wind farms are also contemplated in regional 2030 development agenda, as urgent alternatives for a country badly in need of alternatives to traditional sources of power, particularly those renewable sources in coastal areas.
