French farmers mobilize against free trade with Mercosur

Paris, Nov 26 (Prensa Latina) French farmers have taken to the roads today in several cities in the country, rejecting the free trade agreement European Union (EU) - Mercosur and the elimination of standards.

More than twenty tractors arrived in the vicinity of the headquarters of the European Parliament, in the eastern city of Strasbourg, following the call from the Rural Coordinator, the second largest union in the sector.

Demonstrations also were staged in the northern cities of Lille and Rouen, as well as in the southern city of Perpignan, where farm workers feigned a funeral procession.

The Union’s main organization, the National Federation of Farmers’ Unions of France (Fnsea), and the Young Farmers resumed protests on Tuesday, focused on denouncing the EU-Mercosur pact, which they consider harmful for causing unfair competition.

In the French National Assembly, a debate and a non-binding vote will take place at the beginning of the day to ratify the rejection on French soil of the free trade agreement with the market comprising Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay.
