Unitary Workers’ Union of Chile calls national strike

Santiago, Chile, Nov 23 (Prensa Latina) The Unitary Workers' Union (CUT) of Chile is gearing up for a national strike on November 28, to demand job and salary stability and more benefits for state employees.

Another declared purpose is to reject the decision by the new Comptroller General, Dorothy Pérez, to prevent contracted workers from filing complaints in case of being fired, thus forcing them to resort to justice institutions.

“Today there is a latent instability among state workers, since they have lost the only tool that the Comptroller’s Office offered them to file complaints in case of unjustified dismissal,” warned the president of the CUT, David Acuña. Acuña called on the Government to heed their complaints and on parliamentarians to respect state workers, and warned that “we will never again back down on our rights.”

The leader of the union group also chastised some opposition legislators who announced their rejection of a salary increase of a nominal 7.5 percent and three percent real, when the initiative has still to be forwarded.

The call for a strike includes all workers in the country, but especially those working for the state. Further mobilizations have not been ruled out if their demands are not met.
