Theater Festival pays homage to the best of Cuba’s stage

Camagüey, Cuba, Nov 22 (Prensa Latina) A number of Cuban stage figures today were awarded the Avellaneda Plaque at the 19th Theater Festival in this historical city in central Cuba, demonstrating the local will to protect and cultivate theatrical arts.

Playwrights, actors and art scholars received accolades at the Santa Cecilia Convention Hall here.

Among recipients if the aforementioned decoration was Luis Enrique Amador Quiñones, one of the leading figures of Cuban humoresque genre and theater in general in recent years, who lauded the training processes and opportunities offered by the Camagüey Festival.

“We believe that Camagüey cannot exist just as a venue of the Theater Festival. That is, the event has to be in some way a showcase, it has to be a space where different processes find each other, one event that also contributes to educate as a tribute to Cuban theater,” he said.

In mentioning the extension process by the University of the Arts in Havana and its branches in provinces, he said that “The National Commission of Careers must be made up of have people from all over the country, because Camagüey is not like Villa Clara, I think it is important that the whole nation is represented.”

The dynamics of the Camagüey Theatre Festival provide Cuban playwrights, professors and artists in general with a more comprehensive and systematic approach to linking this event with academic training and the assessment of Arts students’ performance.

The festival, to close on the 24th, also acknowledged the significant work for the Cuban stage by René Fernández and Maribel López, to whom the current edition is dedicated.
