1,400 police officers deployed due to protests in Ecuador

Ahora te mando lo que hiceQuito, Nov 21 (Prensa Latina) General Henry Tapia, police commander of the Metropolitan District of Quito, said that 1,400 police officers will be deployed today along with members of the Armed Forces, in the areas where a protest against the Government is planned.

According to what he explained to the press, the express order is not to allow any protester to pass into the Historic Center of the capital, where the Carondelet Palace, the seat of the Executive, is located.

The general said that the police will act based on legal regulations, in case the protesters become violent.

The Ecuadorian Confederation of Free Trade Unions (CEOSL) issued a statement in which it “strongly repudiates the repressive measures announced by the government of Daniel Noboa against the legitimate protests of the people.”

We reject that the thousands of police officers who should be protecting people’s lives are ready to repress the people, said the Ceosl.

The United Workers Front (FUT), the National Union of Educators (UNE) and the Popular Front ratified the mobilizations that will take place in 12 provinces of the country during the afternoon of this Thursday.

In response to the Government’s warning about the progressive use of force in the face of possible acts of violence that may occur, the social and union organizations responded that this demonstrates the repressive and authoritarian character of President Daniel Noboa.

“We hope that this is not a prelude to beginning a process of criminalization of the social struggle, violating the right to protest stipulated in the Constitution,” they stated in a statement released in social networks.

They also denounced the purchase of 280 thousand tear gas grenades for 6.8 million dollars, while there is a lack of investments for health, education or the electrical sector.

The strong police presence in the surroundings of where the popular concentration will take place occurred hours after the statements of the Minister of the Interior, Monica Palencia, who recalled the validity of a state of exception in the capital, a measure that limits the rights of freedom of association.

The president of the FUT, José Villavicencio, confirmed that this Thursday they will take to the streets and rejected the threats of the Government.

He considered that the Executive, far from listening to the popular demands, opts for repressive measures, prohibiting the protesters from reaching the Historic Center of Quito. “This act is a blow to our freedoms and a threat to democracy,” he emphasized.
