Number of Afghans deported from Iran rises, UNHCR says

Kabul, Nov 21 (Prensa Latina) – The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) has reported an 18% increase in the deportation of Afghan migrants from Iran compared to last year.

According to the UNHCR office in Kabul, nearly 560,000 Afghan migrants were deported from Iran in the first nine months of this year, averaging about 2,400 individuals deported per day. Estimates from UNHCR’s border monitoring partners indicate that approximately 559,000 undocumented Afghans were deported from Iran through the Islam Qala and Zaranj crossing points during this period.

These figures represent an 18% increase over the estimated 472,000 undocumented Afghans deported during the same time frame in 2023.

In related news, Pakistani media have reported that a trilateral meeting will soon take place between the interim government of Afghanistan, Pakistan, and the UNHCR to discuss the situation of Afghan migrants in Iran.
