“It is a proposal that contains a pacifist, environmentalist and social justice vision. It was well received at this G20 meeting,” said the dignitary in her usual press conference after participating on Monday in the first day of the forum held in Rio de Janeiro.
At the meeting, Sheinbaum proposed creating said fund with one percent of what is allocated to arms and promoting the reforestation program Sembrando Vida, in order to mitigate global warming and help people get out of poverty. The president said on Wednesday that Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente will continue to promote the initiative in other multilateral meetings.
According to official data, Mexico has already allocated 1.7 billion dollars, and next year will add nearly 39 billion pesos (more than 1.9 billion dollars), to the initiative implemented in this nation since the last six-year term.
In addition, Sheinbaum said, we are supporting families in Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras, to show that, when the causes of the phenomenon are addressed, migration decreases.
During the Summit, the dignitary also proposed a reform to the UN Security Council, with the aim of implementing a more democratic vision of the world that grants greater legitimacy to the decisions of that body.
Likewise, she met separately with the presidents of the United States, Joe Biden; of France, Emmanuel Macron; of China, Xi Jinping, and of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, as well as with the prime ministers of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and of Vietnam, Pham Minh Chinh.
She also shared a photo with Petro and his counterparts from Brazil and Chile.
“Latin America united. We met with our friends the presidents of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva; Chile, Gabriel Boric Font, and Colombia, Gustavo Petro at the G20 Leaders Summit,” she said in X.
The Group of 20 (G20) includes the 19 largest economies in the world, plus the European and African unions, and represents 85 percent of the world’s Gross Domestic Product, 80 percent of investment, 75 percent of trade and 66 percent of the world’s population.
