Mexico will discuss peace, environment and poverty at G20 summit

Mexico City, Nov 15 (Prensa Latina) President Claudia Sheinbaum said today that Mexico's participation in the next G20 summit will tackle the construction of world peace, the environment and the reduction of poverty.

In response to a question about her objectives at the meeting to be held in Brazil next week, the president alluded in her usual press conference from the National Palace to the figures allocated worldwide to the arms industry.

In 2023, 2.7 billion dollars were allocated to arms and in recent years the budget in that sector grew almost three times more than the global economy, more than six percent, said the dignitary, who referred to her proposal to allocate part of that resource to global programs.

She highlighted the Mexican project Sembrando Vida, through which the authorities promote food self-sufficiency and the well-being of thousands of families, but at the same time captures carbon, restores the social fabric, links people to the land again and reduces migration.

Her country, she recalled, also invests in countries such as Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras in this and another program called Youth Building the Future.

“The proposal is to allocate a percentage to a historic reforestation program throughout the world: it mitigates climate change, reduces poverty, reduces migration by addressing the causes and builds peace and sows life,” she said.

This, she stressed, “instead of sowing death, which is what is sown when money is allocated to weapons.”

The meeting of the G20 -a group made up of the 19 largest economies in the world, the European Union and the African Union- will take place in Rio de Janeiro on November 18 and 19, with emphasis on issues such as the fight against hunger and poverty.
