ELN assures that it will open humanitarian corridor in Choco

Bogota, Nov 13 (Prensa Latina) The National Liberation Army (ELN) announced that from today it will allow a humanitarian corridor in the department of Choco, a region where for five days this armed group maintains restrictions to mobility.

The announcement is made in the midst of a catastrophic situation in that region of the northwest of the country, where it is estimated that there are currently more than 150 000 people affected by the heavy rains, that is, more than 37 500 families in 27 of the 31 municipalities of the territory.

“In order to alleviate the effects of the winter of the inhabitants in the areas where the armed strike is in force, a humanitarian corridor is authorized from November 13, so that humanitarian aid can arrive,” the guerrilla’s western war front said in a communiqué.

The armed group declared that the vessels must carry flags or visible identifications of the institutions they represent and that they carry humanitarian aid in order to avoid incidents and ratified that they will not allow mobility during the night hours.

He also pointed out that the armed strike will continue indefinitely due to the paramilitary presence of the Clan del Golfo.

Notwithstanding the decision of the insurgent force, the Ombudsman Iris Marin, considered that the ELN must completely lift the armed strike that it has maintained since last Saturday so that the communities may return to their lives without confinement.
