President Diaz-Canel mourns death of prominent Cuban scientist

Havana, Nov 13 (Prensa Latina) The President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel, mourned the death of prominent scientist Jorge González Pérez, a prominent forensic expert and Doctor of Legal Medicine.

It hurts a lot to lose a brilliant scientist, passionate and loyal to the last breath, like Jorge González, Popi for all Cubans, Work Hero and admired director of Health, to whom we owe, among many contributions, the discovery of the remains of Che, the president wrote on X.

The day before, the Minister of Public Health, José Angel Portal reported on X the death of who he considered an endearing person and a paradigm of Medicine and Science in Cuba.

Popi, as he was known to Cubans, led from 1995 the search for the remains of Che and his comrades fallen in the internationalist fight in Bolivia in 1967, which culminated with the identification and return to Cuba of the guerrilla commander and several of his fighters in 1997.

He served as a deputy to the National People’s Power Assembly from 1998 to 2003, being re-elected for the period 2003-2008, during which he held the position of Chairman of the Health and Sports Committee of the Parliament.

He also served as chairman of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Bolivia on both occasions.

He was ratified as a deputy on April 18, 2018 at the constituent session of the IX Legislature, held at the Palacio de Convenciones in ef/arm/mem/ev
