The work is done by Reluxes Herrería, a local development project in the city of Santa Clara, 278 kilometers east of Havana, which is expected to close the year with 300 pieces of furniture recovered for hospitals, polyclinics, maternity homes and grandparents’ clubs in the territory.
They will be added to the more than 1,000 repaired in 2023 and fundamentally linked to the Plastic Surgery and Caumatology service at the Arnaldo Milián Castro Provincial Hospital, the only one of its kind in central Cuba.
Dr. Ramón Pérez, head of this service at the main hospital in the Cuban province, praised the quality of the repaired furniture, which has been in use for more than 30 years, especially because they require specialized work to meet the particularities of medical care for burn patients.
In 2024, Reluxes Herrería has already delivered 275 units of clinical furniture, including Fowler beds, nursing chairs, stretchers, IV poles and accompanying tables, and it plans to reach 300 before the end of the year and add their contributions with the repair of 25 beds for one of the main maternity homes in the city.
According to Livan Aguila, administrator of the local development project, the Administration Council in Santa Clara provides the main financing to do the repairs, as part of a program that includes obtaining a minimum profit for the recovered equipment and the linkage between institutions to reduce costs.
In the Reluxes Herrería project, 70 percent of its workers are 35 years old or younger, and its contributions also include work in public spaces in Santa Clara, as well as plans to become involved in the export of aluminum carpentry products.
