New York judge postpones decision in case against Trump

Washington, Nov 12 (Prensa Latina) The judge in charge of the case against the current president-elect of the United States, Donald Trump, who was convicted and awaiting sentence in a criminal case in New York, postponed his decision until November 19.

Magistrate Juan Merchan extended his decision this Tuesday on the defense’s request to dismiss the criminal case.

“The joint request for the suspension of the current terms (…) until November 19 is granted,” said an email between the parties released by the Manhattan Supreme Court.

Trump was charged and found guilty of 34 felonies in May related to falsifying business records to buy the silence in 2016 -in the middle of his first presidential campaign- of a former porn actress with whom he allegedly had an affair in 2006.

At this time, that is the only open legal front against Trump, who had four pending trials and more than 90 state and federal charges.

The lawyers of the 45th President and soon-to-be 47th President asked Merchan before the November 5 elections to dismiss the case in light of the Supreme Court ruling on July 1 that grants former presidents immunity for official acts.

The judge was scheduled to announce the sentence on November 26 for the first former president of the United States brought to trial, after a delay on two occasions.

Trump’s overwhelming and surprising victory a week ago, despite everything, is an unprecedented case and even a study in this country, according to some analysts.
