In the context of President Xi Jinping’s upcoming visit to the region, Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian recalled that this initiative was intended to strengthen relations between both parties towards closer and more beneficial cooperation.
The spokesman noted that this decade has seen the vision of a community of shared destiny evolve from a proposal to tangible actions and projects, yielding significant results for both regions.
He emphasized that this effort garnered strong support, leading to advancements in various development areas for Latin America and the Caribbean. Furthermore, he highlighted that China, Latin America, and the Caribbean proudly champion peace, development, and cooperation, aligning their national strategies and enhancing the benefits of their collaborative projects.
According to Lin, both sides have advocated genuine multilateralism, while promoting more equitable and fair global governance. A recent example is the collaboration between China and Brazil in the proposal of the “Six-Point Consensus” for the peaceful resolution of the crisis in Ukraine, together with other countries of the “Global South” that formed the “Friends of Peace” group to contribute to the stabilization of the international situation, the official said.
Lin Jian pointed out that China, in economic terms, is the second largest trading partner of Latin America and the Caribbean, and the main one for several countries in the region, and commented that to date free trade agreements have been signed with five nations, and work has been done with 22 others within the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, which has expanded from traditional sectors such as trade, finance and infrastructure, to emerging areas such as energy, digital technology and the aerospace industry.
As a result, direct air transport between China and Latin America has become an “Air Silk Road,” promoting connectivity between the two regions, Lin said, adding that China has contributed to the development of human resources in Latin America and the Caribbean through training programs, as well as sending experts in areas such as medicine and agriculture. “China is a true friend and a reliable partner of the countries and peoples of Latin America and the Caribbean,” he said, adding that the bilateral relationship has entered a new stage of equality, mutual benefit, innovation, openness, and well-being for the populations.
Lin Jian confirmed that Xi Jinping’s agenda in Latin America will mark his sixth trip to the region since 2013. The president will visit Peru on November 14th at the invitation of President Dina Boluarte and to participate in the 31st Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders’ Meeting. The leader will then travel to Brazil for the 19th G20 Summit and a state visit to mark the 50th anniversary of establishing diplomatic relations.
