Published in BMC Public Health journal, the study explains that both lack of sleep and excessive sleep are associated with adverse maladies, such as depression, cognitive decline, and mortality.
The study also provides further evidence of the importance of normal and consistent sleep to prevent physical and mental health problems.
To conduct the research, experts from Wenzhou Medical University in China analyzed more than 3,300 patients aged 45 years and older and their sleep habits in 2011, 2013, and 2015, and a subsequent health checkup in 2020.
They defined that a person who has successfully aged is free of significant chronic diseases, has no physical decline, has high cognitive function, good mental health, and active engagement in life, the study stated.
