Colombia to present ambitious agenda at COP29

Bogotá, Nov 11 (Prensa Latina) Colombia will present an ambitious agenda at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP29) taking place in Azerbaijan, focused on the integration of biodiversity and climate, climate financing and the reduction of emissions, it was reported here today.

According to a statement from the Ministry of Environment and Sustainable Development, the South American nation will participate with a delegation headed by the director of that portfolio, Susana Muhamad, who also holds the presidency of the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity (COP16) for the next two years.

The official will represent the parties that make up the Convention on Biological Diversity at this COP29 to advance one of the key points defined during COP16: defend the convergence between the commitments to conserve the planet’s flora and fauna and the goals of reducing greenhouse gases, the statement said.

“COP16 made a decision by consensus on the need for synergies between biodiversity and climate change. We will take this decision precisely to COP29 on Climate to vindicate the importance of including in the commitments acquired by the countries the care for biodiversity and the goals of the Kunming Montreal Framework,” said Muhamad.

In a context of global urgency, Colombia will also reaffirm its commitment so that the countries with the greatest biological diversity have the necessary tools to face the climate crisis without compromising their ecosystems.

Aligned with this vision, the Colombian State will present in Azerbaijan the first report of the panel of experts on debt, climate and nature, an initiative promoted by Muhamad to create conditions for equitable financing.

In parallel, the South American nation will take advantage of COP29 to advance the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty, adding three new countries to the initiative.

“We are going to push the issue of the Economic Pact, the Financial Pact, at this COP,” said Muhamad, referring to the urgency of reforming the economic system that maintains a structural dependence on fossil fuels.

COP29 takes place in Baku, Azerbaijan, from November 11 to 22, 2024.
