Cuba’s President inspects recovery efforts in areas hit by Rafael (+P

Havana, 8 November (Prensa Latina) Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel returned today to the western province of Artemisa to assess the damage caused by Hurricane Rafael, which hit the Caribbean nation as category 3 storm on the Saffir-Simpson scale.

Accompanied by the Secretary of Organisation of the Cuban Communist Party, Roberto Morales, the head of state arrived in the municipality of Güira de Melena, which suffered extensive damage to power lines and agriculture.

In his report to X, Morales said that brigades of electricians were on their way to the area and that the National Defence Council had allocated resources to help with the recovery work.

He added that he and the President had also visited the municipality of Alquízar, where he said they were working hard without neglecting the recovery of his community.

The day before, during a tour of the areas affected by the weather phenomenon, Díaz-Canel stressed the importance of keeping the population informed about what is being done to restore electricity, water and food supplies.

Everything must be restored as soon as possible. The hurricane must not be used as an excuse for failing to meet deadlines, perhaps, but not for failing to meet commitments,’ he stressed.

Hurricane Rafael hit western Cuba on 6 November with winds of more than 100 kilometres per hour, causing serious damage in the provinces of Artemisa, Mayabeque and Havana, affecting agriculture, housing, hospital infrastructure and the electricity system.
