US must respect Cuba’s sovereignty, ICAP president said in India

New Delhi, Nov 6 (Prensa Latina) The United States should respect the Cuban people's sovereignty and its right to choose their own political system, Fernando Gonzalez, president of the Cuban Institute for Friendship with Peoples (ICAP), said in India where continues his visit on Wednesday.

In meetings with students from the University of Delhi and Jamia Millia Islamia, Gonzalez pointed out that the course of history in both countries has shown that Washington has a problem accepting the Caribbean nation’s independence.

I do not think it is ideological, although I believe that it is through socialism that we can guarantee the Cuban people their independence and sovereignty, he said.

The ICAP president noted that given the imperial nature of the United States as a nation, there is a belief in its political leadership that they should direct Havana’s designs due to its proximity to US territory.

Of course, most Cubans understand that socialism is the system that guarantees our independence and our sovereignty, I think the political leadership in the United States could not understand that so far, and I hope that one day they accept that Cuba has the right to decide how we want to organize our society, he said.

Responding to a question from a young woman about the support for the Palestinian cause, Gonzalez reaffirmed the permanent solidarity with that nation that is suffering a massacre by the Israeli government.
