Blockade prevents treatment of cancer patients in Syria

Damascus, Nov 6 (Prensa Latina) Syrian Health Minister Ahmed Damiriyeh said that major challenges, led by the blockade imposed by the United States, hinder the treatment of people with chronic diseases, particularly cancer.

We will not allow these challenges to prevent us from achieving our goals in the field of health, the minister said in his speech during the National Workshop on Strategic Planning to Face Cancer, organized by the Ministry of Health and the National Program for Control of the Disease.

According to Damiriyeh, despite these questionings, including the inhumane blockade and its impact on the supply of generic drugs for those suffering from chronic diseases and cancer, the government continues to provide free diagnostic and treatment services through hospitals and medical centers in several governorates, in addition to providing psychological support and nutritional care.

He disclosed that the Ministry, in cooperation with the National Cancer Control Committee, had already developed a protocol for early detection of lung cancer.

On the other hand, the Secretary of Health said that among the sustainable development goals are premature deaths reduction from cancer and other non-communicable diseases by one third by 2030, as well as to achieve universal health coverage.
