China stresses support for Cuba against US blockade and sanctions

Beijing, Oct 31 (Prensa Latina) The Chinese Foreign Ministry welcomed the international community's overwhelming support for Cuba against the US blockade and demanded its immediate elimination.

“Once again the UN General Assembly passed a relevant resolution with an overwhelming majority of 187 votes, demonstrating firm support for the Cuban people in their just struggle to safeguard sovereignty and oppose external interference and the blockade,” spokesman Lin Jian told Prensa Latina.

In the spokesman’s opinion, this shows that the unilateral and intimidating actions of the United States, which seriously violate the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, are overwhelmingly condemned by the international community.

The spokesman denounced the deep suffering that these coercive measures cause to the Cuban people. “According to Cuban data, the US blockade over the past six decades has cost the island more than 160 billion dollars, of which more than five billion dollars were lost between March 2023 and February 2024, affecting almost all areas of livelihood, including food, medicine and energy,” he said.

Lin reaffirmed China’s opposition to this blockade and Washington’s sanctions. “Since 1992, for 32 consecutive years, China has voted in favor of Cuba’s resolution, calling for an end to this blockade imposed by the United States in the UN General Assembly,” he said.

The spokesman stressed that Beijing will maintain its firm position in favor of international equity and justice and continue to support the Cuban people in their resistance against external interference, in defense of their sovereignty and national dignity.

Beijing’s permanent representative to the UN, Fu Cong, demanded the end of the blockade and the repeal of unilateral sanctions against Cuba, and called for Cuba to be removed from the list of countries that allegedly sponsor terrorism.

The UN General Assembly passed on Wednesday with 187 votes in favor, two against (United States, Israel) and one abstention (Moldova) the thirty-second resolution that demands the end of the US blockade against Cuba. The result confirms the isolation of the United States in its hostile policy against Cuba, described by the international community as obsolete and senseless.
