On his social network X, the president posted a photo of the vote billboard, just when Cuba received overwhelming support and the resolution that calls for the lifting of the unilateral blockade was approved for the thirty-second time.
The Colombian Foreign Ministry released a video showing Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo casting his favorable vote on the document presented by Havana.
“We have just voted against the blockade of Cuba as a measure of principle against any measure of unilateral and extraterritorial sanctions. We see that the result is 187 countries in favor, two against (the United States and Israel) and one abstention,” said the foreign minister, speaking from the United Nations General Assembly.
Later, Murillo approached the Cuban delegation to greet and congratulate his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodríguez.
In a speech given prior to the vote today, Murillo considered the unilateral inclusion of Cuba on the list of countries that supposedly support terrorism to be unjust and unacceptable.
“Colombia knows firsthand that far from supporting terrorism, Cuba has worked tirelessly supporting the search for peace and overcoming the armed conflict in my country,” he said later.
In his words, the island played a key role in achieving the 2016 Peace Agreement between the Government and the extinct Revolutionary Armed Forces-People’s Army.
He added that, after the signing of the Havana Accords, and in its capacity as guarantor country, Cuba played a crucial role in the launching of the first phase of their implementation, which deals with the fundamental issues of disarmament, demobilization and reintegration of combatants.
“Today, Cuba continues to be a significant player in the consolidation of total peace in Colombia and is actively collaborating in negotiations with other armed groups,” he said.
