This support action will coincide with the visit of representatives of the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) to verify Glas’ situation in the maximum security prison La Roca, in the coastal city of Guayaquil.
The participants in the demand for Glas’ freedom will demand that his personal integrity be guaranteed, that his status as a diplomatic asylum seeker be respected and that he be granted the safe conduct requested by Mexico.
Glas, considered one of the symbols of judicial persecution or “lawfare” in Ecuador, was temporarily granted pre-release on November 28, 2022 after the unification of two prison sentences of six and eight years for the Odebrecht and Bribery cases, however, the measure was revoked.
Earlier this year, the justice system ordered his capture for alleged embezzlement in the case called Reconstruction of Manabí, which investigates an alleged embezzlement in public works after the 2016 earthquake.
He was in the Mexican diplomatic headquarters in Quito from December 2023 until April 5 of this year, when Ecuadorian uniformed officers violently entered without authorization to capture him by order of President Daniel Noboa.
