Environmental conservation issues to be debated at COP16 in Colombia

Cali, Colombia, Oct 25 (Prensa Latina) Expert panels to discuss environmental conservation issues are among the activities today in the Green Zone of the United Nations Conference on Biodiversity (COP16).

The space dedicated to the participation of the civil society of the event provides, for this day, different proposals of academic meetings such as the talks devoted to soils and biodiversity; agroecology and sustainable agriculture systems, and renewable energies.

During the previous day, the emphasis of the collateral agenda that takes place at the same time as the discussions of the member states of the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) was placed on the contribution of Afro-descendant communities in the preservation of ecosystems.

Colombia’s Vice President and Minister of Equality and Equity, Francia Márquez, led the meeting where the proposal that will be presented to the COP16 plenary, which seeks the recognition and inclusion of these communities in the mechanisms and bodies of the CBD, was socialized.

No environmental instrument recognizes the Afrodescendant People and it is time to move towards that. I want to reaffirm the call in relation to the COP30 on Climate Change, next year in Brazil, and we are getting ready to fight there (…) for me it is an act of discrimination not to recognize the presence, the voice, the proposals and all that we Afro-descendants mean in the care of biodiversity,” she emphasized.
