Rescue works continue in eastern Cuban province

Havana, Oct 22 (Prensa Latina) This Tuesday, the Interior Ministry (MININT) and the Revolutionary Armed Forces continue their rescue and recovery labors in Imias and San Antonio del Sur municipalities, in Guantanamo province, which has been declared in a state of emergency. Due to the severe damage caused by Tropical Storm Oscar, as it passed through that eastern Cuban province, some regions are inaccessible and have experienced unprecedented flooding. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel announced on Monday that six persons from San Antonio del Sur have died, according to preliminary figures.

Faced with Oscar’s damages in Guantánamo municipalities, the Cuban Young Communist League (UJC), student organizations, and other juvenile movements summoned its members to contribute to the recovery of the territories determined by the authorities.

These organizations responded in a press release that they will immediately form suitable brigades to work in campaign conditions side by side with the people.

Oscar, which entered Cuba as a category 1 hurricane on the Saffir-Simpson scale, is moving away from the Cuban coasts, downgraded to a tropical storm, and will leave rains in the next 24 to 48 hours approximately.

The eastern end of Cuba has historically been hit by 14 tropical cyclones, three of which were hurricanes in October: Flora in 1963, Matthew in 2016, and Oscar in 2024.
