Dominican Republic deported more than 15,000 Haitians in 17 days

Santo Domingo, Oct 21 (Prensa Latina) More than 23 thousand Haitian citizens returned to their country in the first 17 days of this month, of them, a little more than 15 thousand deported by the Dominican Republic, informed today the General Administration of Migration (DGM).

The DGM said that a total of 23,535 Haitians returned to Port-au-Prince, of which 15,488 were returned by Dominican authorities and the rest crossed the border voluntarily.

On October 3, the Dominican Republic announced the massive deportation of irregular migrants, in an operation in which immigration agents are participating with the collaboration of the Army, including the Air Force, the National Police and the Public Prosecutor’s Office, among other agencies.

Immediately, the Government of Haiti condemned “the massive and discriminatory deportations without respect for legal procedures and without consideration for human dignity, in a context of growing xenophobia”.

The Dominican Government ratified its repudiation of such denunciations, “which include an alleged State racism”, in a letter sent to the diplomatic missions in this country last Friday.

The administration of Luis Abinader assured that there is no State policy to discriminate, promote xenophobia, or mistreat people of any nationality.
