United Nations, Oct 18 (Prensa Latina) The UN Security Council will review the extension of sanctions on Haiti, a measure aimed at curbing the flow of illegal weapons and the gang violence in the country.

The meeting will also consider the latest report of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime on the sources and routes of the illicit passage of arms into the Caribbean country.

Among other issues, previous reports assessed the origin of smuggling along with the regional dynamics of its trade and domestic characteristics.

According to reports, arms reach Haiti primarily by sea from the United States, particularly from the state of Florida, although some are also trafficked through intermediaries in the Dominican Republic and Jamaica.

At the end of September, the Security Council renewed the mandate of the Multinational Security Support Mission in Haiti, following a favorable vote by all 15 members.

The vote sent a clear message of concern about the situation in the Caribbean country, plunged for months into a spiral of violence and a severe humanitarian crisis.
