The statement from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) released this Tuesday in Havana, addresses this presence and its relevance for the future of the island’s economy.
The note indicates that a high-level delegation from this nation is participating in the fourth edition of this World Forum.
The statement says that the largest annual meeting of actors in agri-food systems worldwide brings together academics and experts, young people, investors and world leaders in order to create new paths towards a sustainable, inclusive and food-secure future.
Under the slogan Good nutrition for all, today and tomorrow, the event includes sessions dedicated to the Action of the Youth of the World, Science and Innovation and the Investment Forum of the Hand in Hand initiative.
The message insists that when speaking virtually at the event’s opening ceremony on Monday, the President of Cuba, Miguel Díaz-Canel Bermúdez, highlighted the efforts to boost food production by increasing the cultivation of grains, rice, sugar cane and fruits, as part of the Hand in Hand initiative.
Through this joint effort, we seek to create strategic alliances that boost our productive capacities to face current challenges, guaranteeing a more prosperous future for the nation, he said.
He also pointed out that strengthening investments in these areas seeks to satisfy domestic demand and improve export capacities in line with the national priorities expressed in the Law on Food Sovereignty and Food and Nutritional Security, the State Plan Task Life and the National Plan for Economic and Social Development.
In this context, the Cuban president referred to the visit to Cuba in 2023 by the Director General of FAO, QU Dongyu, as a fundamental element to strengthen the country’s insertion in this initiative.
The Cuban president also thanked the opportunity to participate in the forum with the invitation to consider Cuba as a strategic partner for agricultural development and food security.
The statement mentions the Cuban delegation, headed by Vice Prime Minister Jorge Luis Tapia Fonseca.
This delegation is also made up of the Permanent Representative to FAO, Mirta Granda Averhoff, authorities from the Ministry of Agriculture of Cuba and Foreign Trade and Foreign Investment.
Cuba is present at the FAO Mano a Mano Investment Forum focused on promoting investment strategies and facilitating dialogue between governments, investors and development organizations to mobilize resources that improve food security and support sustainable agriculture, concludes the statement distributed in this capital.
