A series of social groups will gather around the agency under the slogan “Enough hunger! Life demands.”
In statements to local radio, one of the leaders of the protesters said that the rally will take place every Tuesday to condemn the adjustment and to expose the poor living conditions in neighborhoods with the most deficiencies.
“We are a group of institutions that will begin to meet as the Mothers of Plaza de Mayo taught us with their Thursday rounds and the retirees with their Wednesday marches,” he explained, and expressed his concern about the increasing levels of poverty and indigence. “A neighbor told me that she knew she was poor, but that now she is realizing what it truly means. She told me that her family eats in the afternoon which serves as lunch and dinner. It is very hard to hear those things. This is the situation we see in this land that is supposed to feed many people, but where hunger is reigning,” he said.
At the end of September, the National Institute of Statistics and Census reported that during the first half of 2024, poverty rose in Argentina to 52.9 percent and indigence to 18.1, the worst figures in 20 years. According to a study carried out by the agency in 31 urban agglomerations, the first indicator increased 11.2 points compared to the period from July to December 2023 and the second grew 6.2.
