Guatemalan court calls off hearing on local magistrate

Guatemala City, Oct 14 (Prensa Latina) A Guatemalan court called off Monday the first statement hearing of the chief justice and former clerk of the Supreme Electoral Tribunal (TSE) Ramiro Muñoz, who was detained on Monday for the Citizen Prosperity Affaire.

Chief justice Mario Solorzano ruled out the process against the detainee because his colleague Jimi Bremer requested the case’s file to analyze it in his office.

Muñoz, a recognized figure for his role in the 2023 elections in the country, faces charges of abuse of authority for electoral purposes and breach of duties.

The Prosecutor’s Office (MP) stated that, allegedly, he had greed on registering the political Citizen Prosperity party despite the existence of several irregularities.

This party, headed by entrepreneur Carlos Pineda, was excluded from polls before the first round of voting, by a judge’s ruling.

The Electoral Crimes Prosecutor’s Office has twice requested the removal of Muñoz’s immunity.

Before taking on the post of chief justice of an Appeals Court on Sunday, the National Civil Police conducted the arrest, which surprised analysts and the public in general.

Muñoz told the press that there could have been a wrong procedure, since he has enjoyed immunity after being elected by the Parliament.
