Intercommunity clashes in South Sudan leave 20 dead

Juba, Oct 14 (Prensa Latina) New inter-community clashes in South Sudan left some 20 deaths and about 40 wounded in the county of Tonj North, in Warrap state, local media highlight here today.

Radio Tamazuj quoted statements by the Minister of Information, William Wol Mayom, in which he said that the clashes occurred this weekend between members of the Lou community in Alebek Payam.

According to the information provided, the death toll may be higher because the security forces have not yet been able to intervene, due to heavy flooding in the area caused by the rains.

Inter-community clashes in South Sudan are frequent because of the differences between pastoralists and farmers in the most fertile areas of the country, especially as a result of the increase in desertification and population displacement.

After a five-year civil war that destroyed the economy, which caused almost 400,000 deaths and unleashed a humanitarian crisis, the country still faces the challenge of reconciliation.

In the opinion of analysts, last year the discrepancies increased in that territory as a consequence of inter-community fights between African and Arab ethnic groups.

Another scourge facing the country is food insecurity, which threatens more than seven million people.
