African development entity salutes Ugandan Independence Day

Djibouti, Oct 9 (Prensa Latina) The executive secretary of the Intergovernmental Authority for Development (IGAD), Workeneh Gebeyehu, today congratulated the people and government of Uganda, on the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of the independence of that African country.

‘On the occasion of the 62nd anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Uganda, I wish to express my heartfelt congratulations to the people and Government of Uganda, a founding member of IGAD,’ Gebeyehu wrote on his social network account X.

He stated that Kampala’s commitment to regional peace, security and integration continues to inspire our collective vision of a stronger and more resilient region.

May this day be filled with pride and reflection on the path of progress and unity.

On October 9, 1962, the United Kingdom granted independence to the African nation, which t became a republic the following year, with Sir Edward Mutesa II, ‘kabaka’ (king) of the Buganda kingdom, elected ceremonial president of the country.

Back then, leader of the Uganda People’s Congress, Milton Obote, was appointed prime minister.
