China to impose provisional tariffs on brandy imported from Europe

Beijing, Oct 8 (Prensa Latina) China's Ministry of Commerce announced the imposition of provisional tariffs on brandy imports from the European Union (EU), amid trade tensions with the bloc.

According to the official report, an investigation into this portfolio has preliminarily determined that there is dumping (sale at low prices) of this beverage from the EU, which threatens the domestic industry.

The Ministry of Commerce determined the imposition of provisional measures in the form of guarantee deposits from October 11, 2024 at a rate ranging from 34,8% to 39%.

According to experts, France is the most affected by this decision because it is the main exporter of brandy to China and in fact, last year the European country accounted for 99% of the imports of that drink by China.

Paris was one of the EU members that voted to impose tariffs of up to 35% on electric vehicles manufactured in the Asian nation for a period of five years. The vote was divided on this measure, with Spain abstaining and Germany voting against.

Following the findings, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce expressed its firm opposition to “unfair, non-compliant and unreasonable protectionist practices of the EU”.
