Trial for murder of Chilean journalist Francisca Sandoval begins

Santiago de Chile, Oct 7 (Prensa Latina) More than two years later, the trial for the murder of reporter Francisca Sandoval, a worker for the independent media outlet Señal 3 La Victoria, began today in Chile.

The journalist was covering the marches for International Workers’ Day in 2022 in the La Alameda sector, near the Meiggs neighborhood, when she was shot in the head, which caused her death 10 days later.

The incident caused great commotion in the country, as she was the first journalist killed after the end of the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990) and occurred in the midst of a security crisis in the capital.

Marcelo Enrique Naranjo is accused of the crime, who is being tried for consummated homicide, illegal possession of a firearm and unjustified shooting in public.

The victim’s family accused the police of not acting in a timely manner against the violent groups that disturbed the order at the May 1 demonstration.

The trial was originally scheduled for May of this year, but at the request of the Public Prosecutor’s Office it was postponed until October 7, which increased the discontent among the plaintiffs.

Señal 3 La Victoria is an independent community channel, founded in 1997 in the town of that name, one of the oldest settlements in the Chilean capital.

The place was born in 1957 when some 1,200 families from the so-called cordon of misery occupied a large piece of land in the Pedro Aguirre Cerda commune, in the south-central part of Santiago, and after a long struggle they achieved legalization.
