The journalist was covering the marches for International Workers’ Day in 2022 in the La Alameda sector, near the Meiggs neighborhood, when she was shot in the head, which caused her death 10 days later.
The incident caused great commotion in the country, as she was the first journalist killed after the end of the Augusto Pinochet dictatorship (1973-1990) and occurred in the midst of a security crisis in the capital.
Marcelo Enrique Naranjo is accused of the crime, who is being tried for consummated homicide, illegal possession of a firearm and unjustified shooting in public.
The victim’s family accused the police of not acting in a timely manner against the violent groups that disturbed the order at the May 1 demonstration.
The trial was originally scheduled for May of this year, but at the request of the Public Prosecutor’s Office it was postponed until October 7, which increased the discontent among the plaintiffs.
