Mounting violence keeps 300,000 Haitian kids out of school

Port-au-Prince, Oct 7 (Prensa Latina) Running counter to the fact that the new school year started a week ago in Haiti, some 300,000 local children are unable to attend classrooms given the level of gang violence gripping this Caribbean nation, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) just reported.

The international aid organization described the children’s situation as dramatic, especially those living in the Port-au-Prince metropolitan area.

UNICEF Representative to Haiti Geeta Narayan underscored that the violence has been going on for many years, as a social scourge that is seriously affecting education.

According to a recent report, 919 schools remain closed nationwide, an increase of more than 20 percent compared to 2023, aggravating the educational crisis.

A UNICEF survey published by Vant Bef Info digital newspaper showed that 50 percent of young people believe that insecurity is the main obstacle to returning to school.
