Uruguayan Parliament to debate crisis in prison system

Montevideo, Oct 7 (Prensa Latina) Interior Minister Nicolás Martinelli will report to Parliament on the death of six inmates in a fire in the country's largest prison on September 25th, although his appearance will be centered on the crisis in the Uruguayan prison system.

The Frente Amplio wanted to question Martinelli, but the minister got ahead by appearing before the legislature.

At the heart of the matter is the critical situation in Uruguayan prisons, denounced by legislators, Petit and functionaries of the penitentiary system. It is expected that the discussion in Parliament will revolve around overcrowding, poor health and hospitalization conditions, lack of resources for maintenance, and other shortcomings.

Frente Amplio deputy Bettiana Díaz announced that the complaint by authorities regarding the lack of protocols in prison visits will be included, accompanied by versions of minors visiting inmates imprisoned for committing sexual crimes against children and adolescents, which according to Díaz shows a lack of administrative processes, controls and functionaries.
