Eastern US port walkout causes concerns in Panama

Panama City, Oct 2 (Prensa Latina) The Panama Canal Authority (ACP) is closely following the dockworkers' walkout at 14 major ports in the eastern United States, one of its leading trading partners.

In a statement issued by the institution and reported on local media, the ACP pointed out that this situation could affect cargo traffic to that country’s eastern coast and the Gulf of Mexico, the leading origin and destination of ships using the man-made waterway.

The ACP also acknowledged that a prolonged strike would disrupt trade patterns by diverting traffic to other unaffected ports.

“Although no irregular or alert situation has been recorded for the Canal to date, specialists are maintaining constant monitoring and communication with customers to determine specific actions if required,” the document stated.

US dockworkers stopped traffic at 36 US ports on October 1, as part of a strike over a shortage of a wage increase agreement and a ban on automated equipment.
