UN General Assembly will address unprecedented challenges

United Nations, Sep 30 (Prensa Latina) The general debate of the 79th period of sessions of the UN General Assembly will close its sessions dedicated to analyzing, among hundreds of world leaders, the main challenges in the planet with its unprecedented tensions.

Representatives from Nicaragua, Ecuador, Algeria, Syria, Canada, the United Arab Emirates and the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea will speak before the forum, which devotes its sessions to addressing issues such as peace and security or the advancement of the Sustainable Development Goals.

This year the debate has as its theme “Leaving no one behind: Acting together for peace”, sustainable development and human dignity for present and future generations.

Despite these noble purposes, the meeting coincides with a dramatic increase in tensions in the Middle East as conflicts in Ukraine, Sudan and Myanmar and violence in Haiti intensify.

The high-level week began on September 22nd with the adoption of the Future Pact, which gave the green light to the UN’s ambitious project for global governance reform.

For Secretary General of the UN, António Guterres, this document outlines the path for international cooperation that meets the expectations of the planet as well as “to rescue multilateralism from the abyss.”

In parallel to the Future Summit and the general debate, the high-level week consecrated spaces to other urgent issues such as sea level rise, the need to end nuclear weapons and antimicrobial resistance.
