UN: Cuba calls for more support for Haiti with no foreing meddling

United Nations, Sep 23 (Prensa Latina) Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Anayansi Rodriguez today called for effective mechanisms of aid without external interference to overcome the crisis in Haiti, during a meeting on the subject held at the UN.

At the meeting, convened by the UN Economic and Social Council (Ecosoc), the diplomat insisted on the need for significant international financial support to relaunch the economy of that country and effectively resolve its main social and economic problems.

“The serious multidimensional crisis facing this sisterly Caribbean nation has exacerbated social instability, poverty and underdevelopment, caused by centuries of colonial and neocolonial plundering and foreign interventions,” warned Rodríguez.

The Cuban representative recalled that her country has provided solidarity and selfless cooperation to Haiti for years in areas of great impact for its people.

Currently, a medical brigade remains in the south with 57 health professionals, she said at the meeting convened to coincide with the high-level segment of the UN General Assembly.

Rodríguez welcomed the efforts by the Community of Caribbean countries to find solutions to the complex situation and its call for a long-term development strategy.

“We insist on the need to establish effective aid mechanisms that guarantee the efficient use of resources for the Haitian people,” she added.
