The Global Environment Facility (GEF) in partnership with the Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization) organized the forum, active through September 26.

It will address urgent global challenges related to water and ocean sustainability within the framework of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Environment Ministry stated that the GEF is the largest global funding mechanism for water. It has used more than 3 billion dollars in grants and 19 billion dollars in co-financing over the last 30 years. Such funds have supported 470 projects in 157 countries.

Uruguay’s Environment Minister Robert Bouvier highlighted the importance of the event and the relevance of “critical projects in our country, such as the protection of the Garzon Lagoon” in the Rocha department.
