Parliamentarians call for Cuba’s removal from terrorist US list

Havana, Sep 21 (Prensa Latina) Nearly 600 parliamentarians from 73 countries called on the U.S. Government to remove Cuba from the State Department's list of alleged States Sponsoring Terrorism (SST).

In a letter coordinated and published on Friday by the Progressive International (PI), legislators considered this designation as cynical, cruel and a clear violation of international law, and urged their respective governments to advocate for withdrawing Cuba from this SST list.

The document points out that, according to United Nations experts, such a measure has undermined fundamental human rights, including the rights to food, health, education, economic and social rights, life and development.

The signatories of the letter argued that the designation is cruel on the grounds that maximizes the suffering of the Cuban people, stifling their economy, displacing their families and even restricting the flow of humanitarian aid.

Cuba’s Foreign Ministry recalled that the inclusion of his country in the alleged SST was once withdrawn in 2015 after a thorough assessment by the Obama Administration; however, former President Trump included Cuba on the SST list at the end of his term by 2021. The Ministry, went on to saying that currently, President Joe Biden has not removed the measure, despite promising a return to the Obama-era policy.

The letter supported by the parliamentarians comes after 35 former heads of State and Government wrote to Joe Biden asking him to remove Cuba from the SST list as he enters his final months in office.
